Karen Spiegel Update: Why Riverside’s 2nd District Race is Pivotal for Public Safety – and Why Spiegel is on the Wrong Side of History

by | Sep 6, 2018 | 2018 Elections, Karen Spiegel, Riverside County Sheriff's Race, Stan Sniff | 2 comments

Many of you reading this blog for any length of time know I have been all over Stan Sniff. The incompetence and corruption within the Riverside Sheriff’s Office needs to stop.

Recently, we have been shredding the Jurupa Valley Station for its’ shenanigans.

Jurupa Station covers a huge chunk of Sup District 2 – Eastvale, Jurupa itself and Norco are three contract cities within that district. The Pivot of the district is Corona, which has their own Police.

Read more about the Disaster at Jurupa Valley here. Read about the Critical Shortages of Manpower at Jurupa Valley Here.

Those in Corona are hugely affected by the foibles of Stan Sniff and the Sheriff’s Department. The crime spills over.

When you add in that Karen Spiegel’s mismanagement of the finances of the City of Corona, you will realize that her recent decisions cost the Corona PD 14 Officers and the Corona FD 6 Firemen.

So you have critically low staffing at Jurupa Valley and critical cuts at Corona PD. This is a recipe for a crime nightmare.

But wait, there’s more. The mismanagement of the jails and the horrendous early release of felons problem in Riverside County layers on as well. It is too bad that Karen Spiegel would rather continue a personal war with Corona PD than look at the big picture. Perhaps this is why she supports the Corrupt Sheriff Stan Sniff, simply to stick it in the eye of the Corona PD.

Corona appears to have a gang problem, which is fueling the angst of the citizens groups that have risen up to oppose Karen Spiegel. The unincorporated area of Corona that is having a crime explosion gets exactly 1 Sheriff’s Deputy per shift. You hear nothing about this failure from Spiegel or her crew.

Stan Sniff and John Taviglione are both trying to cover their tracks with the currently in process KPMG Audit in Jurupa Valley Station. Sniff has pulled deputies in from other poorly staffed stations long enough to create a staffing illusion at Jurupa Valley and JT is going to claim some sort of vindication of the audit process.

How does this involve Spiegel? She is alleged to have promised JT that she’d bring all of his staff over with her, causing JT to throw in with Spiegel as well. Now John Taviglione is able to tie up his loose ends on the way out the door.

Anyone that thinks Spiegel would be independent of John Taviglione has another thing coming. Given that JT has also endorsed the corrupt Sheriff after having been loudly critical of his grotesque failures as Sheriff, you have to wonder what sort of “deal” went on in the background. Spiegel is in the thick of it as she is squarely in both Sniff’s and JT’s camp. (She is also using the same fundraiser as Stan Sniff is as well)

Spiegel is also openly hostile to the Corona Police Officer’s Association. I’ve had multiple stories presented to me about how aggressively Karen Spiegel berates the Corona Public Safety Reps any chance she gets.  This is very similar to how Sheriff Stan Sniff has addressed anyone that his disagreed with him. Tracking the behavior of these two and the similarities tells me that Spiegel will spend her entire 4 year term retaliating against any law enforcement / public safety group she can.

The issues in Corona are pretty straightforward. The issues in Supervisoral District 2 are pretty straightforward: Jurupa Valley nearly filed a municipal BK in the last 10 years, was rumored to be looking an unincorporating, Norco and Corona are suffering from the effects of financial woes and increasing Crime, the 91 Freeway is a nightmare made worse by the decisions of government (the 15 is not much better), local leadership is inbred and new entrants in to the fray are annihilated, and of course the age old debate about development vs NIMBY-ism.

Spiegel is 100% the old guard. She has been on the Corona City Council for two decades and her husband runs the local Chamber of Commerce. They both have significant ownership of the problems in Corona. As such, Spiegel is not qualified to be a supervisor and people should choose Eric Linder instead.

To be continued.

  1. See you next Tuesday Karen

  2. I am a Corona resident and have met Karen many times. Every time I meat her I’ve wondered where she parked her broom.
