AD-04 Update: Beth Gaines Slammed for Falsely Claiming to be a Small Business Owner

by | Feb 2, 2011 | 4th Assembly District Race, Beth Gaines, John Allard | 12 comments

Blogger’s Note: My wife does not own any part of Park Family Insurance, even though California is a Community Property State. Marriage is not business ownership. The Allard Campaign is basically saying that Beth Gaines is trying to claim ownership in a family farm or Point West Insurance even though 7 years of financial disclosures by Ted Gaines and even Beth’s own form 700 indicate no direct ownership of either by Beth… this campaign is getting intense and quick. Lucky for Rob Matthews, he is in a comfortable RV away from this…

It remains to be seen if a judge will force Beth to change her ballot designation.

Beth Gaines Misleading Voters with Ballot Designation

No Evidence She is ‘Small Business Woman’

Sacramento – Small business owner and State Assembly candidate John Allard has filed a lawsuit in Sacramento County Superior Court challenging opponent Beth Gaines’ ballot designation in the upcoming election for Assembly District 4. The Gaines ballot designation is misleading.

Gaines claims to be a “small business woman” but there is no evidence of her being in business of any kind.  Her husband is a small businessman but she is simply not.  The paperwork she has filed with the Placer County Elections Office proves her lack of ability to claim this title.

In what appears to be her own handwriting on FPPC Statement of Economic Interest Form 700, Gaines claims that her income from Gaines Ranch was more than $100,000 in the last year but notes when asked to describe her business position with that entity – in other words how she came to receive that income – she wrote “Spouse is partner.” Similarly, in describing the income from Pointwest Insurance Associates, where Gaines asserts she is a marketing consultant, Gaines claims more than $100,000 in income but notes, “Spouse is Vice President” in the section that asks the candidate for her business position. Gaines does not declare any income of her own.

Beth Gaines does not get to claim the ballot designation of “small business woman” because her husband is a small businessman anymore than she should be able to claim that she is a State Senator.

In looking at Senator Ted Gaines’ Form 700s for over more than a decade of public service, not once does he ever list any income from his spouse for family income although the law requires him to.  One of them has to be wrong. Either Senator Gaines has not been complying with the public disclosure laws over the past decade or Beth Gaines is not truly a “small business woman” as she claims.

Statements of Economic Interests (SEI Form 700) are public documents filed by candidates and public office holders with the Fair Political Practices Commission. The purpose of the SEI is to identify any business or other entities that may provide conflicts of interests for the candidate and the job they are charged to perform.

  1. Wow, this is juicy stuff! I wonder if Beth will counter with some revelations about Allard…

  2. Make sure I get a copy of it, please…

  3. What kind of stuff will she attack with I wonder?

  4. So hey Aaron I would love to hear from your wife now that you admit she is of no consequence and has no input nor knows anything about your business!!! It must be refreshing in your little caveman way to know that “Me man you woman” Does she really follow that crap?? I know my wife would kick my you know what if I told her she had only one job?? Be quiet you know nothing and I am the King!!!

  5. @Rodney – Sober Up.

@Placer GOP – look at Rodney’s comment for your answer.

  6. I didn’t catch any misogyny in there. Where did you see it? I hope they show us the proof this isn’t the case.

  7. By “this” I meant the charges that Mrs. Gaines doesn’t have any ties to business.

  8. There must be some dirt on Allard. He’s been a councilmember for 7 years, and before that on the planning commission and before that he was Tim Leslie’s flunkie. We already know he’s a double-dipper – took per diem while he was being wined and dined in D.C. by “business interests” of the city’s. Did he declare the money as income to the IRS? Hmmmm…

  9. That will be interesting.

  10. It was evident as soon as Beth declared her “right” to Ted’s seat that this was going to be an unnecessarily divisive election. Independent voters, as well as many GOP voters, have been turned off by this stupidity. When will the California GOP return to sanity and the desire to win elections rather than empire building? A party of principles? Hardly. A party of ideas? Not for decades!

  11. I’m a businessman in Sacramento who works with his wife. Point West is our insurance and I have discussed my plans with Beth. Also not trying to split hairs but isn’t running a household considered running a business anymore or do we have to be identified as a housewife? If Beth considers herself a business woman where’s the crime? What has she done wrong? Is she supposed to be labeled by a political opponent for expediency?
Some are walking a very thin line here. I personally would very much like to see a debate

  12. Ken – for information, are you the former chairman of the ElDorado GOP?

Beth screwed up by simply trying to look like something she wasn’t… that’s simply it.

If you look at the form 700’s – they indicate no ownership interest whatsoever in the businesses by Beth. That’s the problem…
