Roseville City Council Update: Sam Cannon Ballot Statement – A Leader

by | Sep 9, 2010 | Roseville City Council 2010, Sam Cannon, Tim Herman

In the interest of fairness – I interviewed Tim Herman for about 45 minutes. I will be writing a two part post about my conversation with him. His words – not mine.

I believe that Sam Cannon offers the right contrast to Mr. Herman. Look at Sam Cannon’s ballot statement for the first clues:

SAM CANNON Age: 43 Occupation: Chief of Staff
Education and Qualifications: I’m proud to call Roseville my home –
it’s a great city to live and raise a family. My children attend
Roseville’s excellent public schools. But we’re facing real challenges
and need new ideas and committed leadership to tackle these issues.
Sam Cannon: Commitment. Trusted. Experienced. Involved.
My commitment has been shown during 10 years of community leadership. I served on the Utilities Commission, where I fought to maintain clean, reliable water and keep Roseville’s electricity rates low.

As a Planning Commissioner, I worked on the Galleria expansion and The Fountains, giving Roseville the best shopping and restaurants around – and generating significant tax dollars for vital programs. And I’ve worked hard to cut traffic congestion and revitalize downtown.

The economy is still struggling, so I’ll continue to oppose higher taxes or fees on families or businesses. I’ll work to cut red-tape so businesses can succeed and create jobs. And, I’ll fight to ensure our police and firefighters have the resources needed to protect our neighborhoods and families.

I’d be honored to have your support – and your vote on November 2nd.

Here’s the stark contrast – Sam Cannon is the only candidate to talk about cutting red tape, opposing higher taxes and to cite specific examples of what he has done to bring businesses in to Roseville.

This stands in complete contrast to Tim Herman’s ballot statement that talks about “sustainability” and other green catch-phrases.

Secondly – Sam Cannon talks about working to cut traffic congestion, Mr. Herman references “taking a balanced approach, proactively protecting our environment” – a not-so-subtle difference but one that suggests some serious  philosophical differences in governance.

Herman appears to have a resume advantage on Sam Cannon with his volunteer service and the like. Sam Cannon is very well connected politically – that’s where the battle in the trenches will be fought.

Finally, Sam Cannon’s ability to cite specific examples of leadership in planning Roseville’s future is a major strategic advantage I’d expect Cannon to utilize frequently.
